The Hays Lab is led by Principal Investigator Michelle Hays, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan and an HHMI Hanna Gray Fellow. Previously, Michelle was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, working with Professor Dr. Gavin Sherlock in the Department of Genetics. Michelle received her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Washington, with her thesis research in Dr. Harmit Malik's Lab. Before graduate school, she fell in love with yeast genetics first while working with Dr. Greg Carter, then as a research technician in Dr. Aimee Dudley's lab. Her B.Sc. is in Microbiology and German from Colorado State University.
Outside of the lab, Michelle loves rowing, gardening, dancing, quilting, and cozy mornings with hot coffee and her support team of geriatric cats. She enjoys spending her free time with yeasts sometimes too: baking and homebrewing.

Bella received her B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she majored in molecular and cellular biology. Her previous research experiences include identifying mutations that drive resistance to bacteriophage in E. coli through the Jansville SRI program and conducting CRISPR screens to study novel gene dependencies in Epstein-Barr-positive Burkitt Lymphomas in Dr. Bill Sugden's lab. In her free time, Bella likes gaming, baking, hanging out with friends, and exploring new restaurants.
