Science is a collaborative endeavor!
The Hays Lab welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities, and is a team that champions growth and creativity in science. Our lab is dedicated to cultivating an equitable and supportive environment for trainees, while pursuing curiosity-driven research. We believe that the best science can only happen when all team members share a sense of belonging and mutual respect. To this end, the lab is an inclusive and safe environment where all members can conduct innovative and rigorous science. We pursue creative excellence, and have fun doing it!
The Hays Lab values open science. As such, we strive to publish in open-access journals, freely discuss our work at conferences, and are happy to share strains and protocols. Science thrives on collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Our team values open scientific discussion and sharing of constructive feedback. We believe this builds scientific communication skills, ensures project integrity, fosters an atmosphere of support, and promotes personal growth for all scientists at all levels in the lab.
Land Acknowledgement
The University of Michigan stands on the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg and Wyandot. The University of Michigan was made possible by indigenous people’s cession of lands under coercive treaties common in the colonization and expansion of the United States. This grant, for “the college at Detroit,” was made by Anishinaabeg — including Odawa, Ojibwe, and Bodewadami — so that their children could be educated. These lands continue to be the homeland of many indigenous people, and through these words of acknowledgment, we seek to reaffirm and respect their contemporary and ancestral ties to the land and to recognize their contributions to the University.
